For general information regarding being able to choose the right powered winch for your boat, or to learn about how they can be set up for optimal use, the following links maybe of use.


If you are unsure of identifying your winch, please follow the step-by-step guide below, which will allow you to identify the age and type of winch.

1.   Determining whether plain top or self-tailing

Plain top winches simply have round tops with a handle socket
Self tailing winches have a stripper arm and jaws

2.   Determine size

The size of the winch can be found on the metal plate of the top of the winch

3.   Determine number of speeds   

The number of speeds can also be found on the metal plate on the top of the winch.

When trying to locate your winch the speed will be listed after the size, separated by decimal point. For example, a size 32 two speed winch will be listed a 32.2 

4.   Determine age

The date your winch was made is stamped onto the centre stem of the winch. Used this date to select the correct parts list and diagram.

The date of manufacture is stamped on the centre stem of the winch. Please note the position may vary depending on winch type.

5.   Determine material

The material of the winch refers only to the drum. If your drum needs replacing, identify it by the table below and select the relevent drum in your winch parts list.
